A Venetian table on the water.
Pizza, pasta and the catch of the day, served along a quiet canal in Santa Croce — a few steps from the Church of the Tolentini.

Honest cooking, Venetian roots.
Osteria Leone Alato is a small, family-run kitchen serving the food Venetians actually eat: home-made pizza, fresh pasta, and the day's seafood from the lagoon and the Adriatic. Antipasti like baccalà mantecato, primi like spaghetti alle vongole and risotto al nero di seppia, and a short list of grilled fish to finish.
Our cooking is unfussy and generous — recipes from the Veneto, prepared the way they have been for generations, with vegetarian options always on the menu.

Beside the Tolentini canal, away from the crowds.
We sit along the Fondamenta dei Tolentini, a calm stretch of water in Santa Croce tucked away from the rush of San Marco. The carved winged lion above our door — the Leone Alato, ancient symbol of Venice — gives us our name.
A few minutes on foot from Piazzale Roma and the Santa Lucia train station, we are often the first proper Venetian meal for travellers arriving by train, bus or car — and a quiet refuge to come back to in the evening.

Tables on the canal, candle-light inside.
Inside, a handful of tables under low candle-light and warm Venetian stucco. Outside, a small terrace right on the fondamenta — one of the loveliest places in the city to sit with a glass of Soave and watch the boats go by.
A casual, welcoming room — fair prices, a short wine list from the Veneto, and a warm welcome whether you have come for a pizza, a long dinner, or simply an aperitivo.

All of Italy, in one cellar.
Behind the dining room, a cellar built up over the years — bottles from every region of the peninsula, from Alpine whites to the deep reds of Sicily, with a generous place of honour reserved for the wines of the Veneto and Friuli.
A short, considered list at the table, and a longer one for those who want to spend the evening getting to know it.
A few glimpses of the osteria.
The room, the canal, the kitchen — a small selection of moments from a typical evening at Leone Alato.
